This piece on NPR from “Engines of our Ingenuity” brought back memories of lessons in 8th grade Earth Science.
“Meandering Rivers”
This concept of channel flow is an excellent mathematics, physics and fluids problem. Think also of chemicals mixing as they are transported through a pipe. What kind of turbulence is created by the edge of the channel? When can you assume minimal drag and uniform flow along the edges of the channel? As you could see looking out the window of the plane, uniform flow is not a good assumption for a river!

Jana is donating 4 hours of tutoring to the Flanders Nature Center “4 Seasons of Flanders” silent auction. This is a great annual event for a worthy cause. If you haven’t attended in the past, I strongly recommend it. The auction items are always top-notch, the dinner and company are wonderful, and the event generates needed funding for a local non-profit. See their website for more information, or call them at 203.263.3711.

According to a recent New York Times article: “The United States is failing to develop the math skills of both girls and boys, especially among those who could excel at the highest levels, a new study asserts, and girls who do succeed in the field are almost all immigrants or the daughters of immigrants from countries where mathematics is more highly valued.”
The article describes a study recently published in Notices of the American Mathematical Society that suggests that American culture dissuades students, particularly girls, from pursuing math skills. Clearly this is a trend that we as a society need to work to reverse.
