NYT Article on U.S. Math Skills

by Bill Dunbar on October 14, 2008

According to a recent New York Times article: “The United States is failing to develop the math skills of both girls and boys, especially among those who could excel at the highest levels, a new study asserts, and girls who do succeed in the field are almost all immigrants or the daughters of immigrants from countries where mathematics is more highly valued.”

The article describes a study recently published in Notices of the American Mathematical Society that suggests that American culture dissuades students, particularly girls, from pursuing math skills. Clearly this is a trend that we as a society need to work to reverse.
